For people with celiac disease or anybody else on a gluten free diet, finding gluten free foods can be a real challenge. Luckily there are several great methods available that make finding gluten free foods much easier.
Gluten free food fairs: There are several organizations that hold gluten free food fairs. One of my favorite to addend are Celiac Sprue Association chapters. Most CSA chapters have at least one gluten free food fair per year. For example the Denver CSA has a fair coming up on June 13th. Last year they had over 50 vendors and more than 500 people attendees.
Gluten free walk throughs at grocery stores: Several grocery stores schedule gluten free walk troughs. Often on these tours somebody from the store will walk you through the store and show gluten free products that they carry. Plus, they will also share gluten free tricks and tips. One of the nice things about these tours is after they show you a product; you know where you can purchase it! If your favorite store doesn’t have an event calendar it’s a good idea to ask somebody in customer service if they offer gluten free tours.
Gluten free lists: Several organizations compile lists of products that are gluten free. The Celiac Sprue Association has an excellent list that I highly recommend. I don’t think it’s available online, but most chapters have hard copies available.
Grocery store shelves: As most people know grocery stores are getting pretty good at pointing out gluten free products. This includes gluten free sections and having gluten free signage next to products. Plus of course, some manufactures of gluten free products mention this on the front of the label too.
Internet searches: Of course it doesn’t get much simpler than typing some words in Google such as “Gluten free desserts,” “gluten free teriyaki”, or “gluten free products.”
If anybody knows of any other useful methods please let me know. I’d be happy to share them with everybody in the future. Or you can always post a comment below.
