Healthy and Natural Energy Drinks

by Seth on June 4, 2009

Maybe I should rename this blog.  It’s supposed to be about sauces, but it’s turning into a more general food blog.  Anyway, I’ve been so busy transforming the sauce industry that I haven’t had enough time to think about new blog names.  I guess it will have to wait.

As you can see from the title, this post is about healthy energy drinks.  It seems like I’ve been reading a lot lately about energy drinks and have come across some interesting sites.

After I graduated from college I used to drink a ton of Red Bull.  Since it’s packed full of sugar, I switched to Diet Red bull after a while.  But eventually, I stopped drinking that since it didn’t really seem to have a lot of benefits (besides keeping me awake due to the caffeine) and it wasn’t natural.  It seems that Red Bull cola was recently banned in part of Germany.  According to the BBC six German states have banned it after traces of cocaine were found in it.  As a note, it was the Red Bull Cola energy drinnk which I believe isn’t sold in the United States.

Of course Red Bull isn’t the healthiest option when it comes to energy drinks.  If you go into any natural grocery store (or conventional stores that have natural sections) there are a bunch of much healthier energy drink options.  I even know of an energy drink that uses agave nectar as a sweetener.

Besides looking for healthy energy drinks at grocery stores, it can be really simple to make them at home.  I found a really good article on making energy drinks on the Whole Foods web site.  The post not only gives recipes, but it also brings up some good points that I never thought about.  For instance it talks about the importance of salt in energy drinks.  But, it brings up the fact that most people consume enough of these electrolytes in their normal diet that they don’t need any additional sodium in their energy drinks.  Also, some of the energy drink ideas look really tasty such as an energy drink that contains Peppermint tea with pureed strawberries and a teaspoon of frozen apple juice concentrate.
